What Is Natural Gas

Natural gas is made up of hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane, naturally occurring in rock formations deep below the earth’s surface. The natural gas is withdrawn and transported to the homes and businesses through an underground system of pipes.  Natural gas is a nontoxic, colorless fuel, about one-third lighter than air and has no smell in its natural state.  It is lighter than air and will rise to the ceiling of an interior confined space.  A natural gas leak can displace air and cause suffocation.  Natural gas has a limited flammability range and a high ignition point.  When mixed with air in the right proportion and ignited by a spark or flame, natural gas will burn or explode.  Before the natural gas enters the RWD #10 Gas natural gas pipeline an odorant is added to make natural gas detectable to sense of smell.

What To Do If You Smell Gas Inside A Building

If you happen to smell gas in your home and are unable to find the source, go to a neighbor’s house and call RWD #10 Gas.  Do not use the telephone in or around your home; do not switch a light on or off, or light a match when leaving your home; wait at the neighbor’s house until our service technician arrives to make a safety inspection of your home.
